"After years of right-wing assaults on higher education, attacks took a new form in 2023 and 2024 that has been described as the new McCarthyism. As students across the country organize protests against Israel’s war on Gaza, decades-long taboos in academia around criticism of Israel–the “Palestine exception”–are shattered. This film features professors and students as they join calls for a ceasefire and divestment from companies that do business with Israel and face waves of crackdown from administrators, the media, the police and politicians. The documentary unfolds as a story of college campuses as sites of both rebellion and repression, places where personal and collective histories converge in unexpected ways from administrators, the media, the police and politicians. Report on Solidarity Trip to the West Bank
Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Corvallis, 2945 NW Circle Blvd, Corvallis, OR
Rretired OSU professor Joe McGuire will report on his recent three-week trip to Bethlehem for volunteer work at the Palestine Museum of Natural History. The event will be at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Corvallis, 2945 NW Circle Blvd. Joe wrote this preface to his presentation:
MY SOLIDARITY TRIP TO THE WEST BANK 🇵🇸
Joe McGuireBefore October 7, 2023, I stayed only peripherally aware of current events in Palestine. I had read a lot about the oppression of populations and associated systemic denial of rights, freedoms, and opportunities to specific groups of people. It’s my favorite book genre. But reading about Palestine-Israel was always less appealing than reading about other histories of oppression closer to home, like here in America - or in Ireland, the land of some of my ancestors.
But soon after October 7 it became clear that the war in Gaza was actually extremely close to home. It was also happening right now. Daily reports from all credible sources recognized the massive military and diplomatic support extended to Israel by the U.S., and also recognized what was definitely beginning to look like U.S. complicity in crimes against humanity. I felt a call to action, but a more immediate call to read about the conflict to learn how it all unfolded in the first place.
By last year I was determined to make a difference by volunteering in Palestine. I felt very strongly compelled to show solidarity with Palestinians, to be a partner in their resilience by immersing myself in a community where I could support local initiatives and projects, and share in witnessing day-to-day events and developments. My volunteer destination was the Palestine Museum of Natural History in Bethlehem.
In my talk I will share more about my motivations for volunteering at the museum, describe the project I worked on, and some of what I learned during my three-week stay in Bethlehem – which included visits to Ramallah and Jerusalem, and several day trips to visit a family in Dheisheh Refugee Camp.
